"The apple is one of our oldest cultivated fruits, having been grown in Europe since prehistoric times. With the passage of years the more important cultivated varieties (technically called 'cultivars') have acquired more than one name and even experts of the day have made mistakes in their identification. To help in achieving the desired goal of one recognized name for each cultivar and only one cultivar for each name, a National Apple Register has been prepared which lists and briefly describes every cultivar known to have been grown in the United Kingdom since 1853, together with its synonyms. By referring to the Register, all those concerned with apple cultivars will be able to ensure that they are using the true name and so avoid confusion. It will be invaluable to breeders, to those concerned with Plant Variety Rights and with current marketing legislation which requires correct labelling. It is serving as a model for other countries' registers and as the basis for the forthcoming International Apple Register."
