Printing Details

Early reprint (51st thousand). Hardback, bound in the original red cloth with gilt titling to spine and gilt roundel to front and rear boards (Alice to the front, the Cheshire Cat to the rear). All edges gilt. 19 × 12.5cm. 192pp [1pp ad].

Not signed as such, but a previous owner's inscription deserves mention. It reads "D J R Parker, Berlin, Oct 1947". Parker was a British military officer in the Second World War, and who acted in a diplomatic / military attache capacity in post-war Berlin.

When Alice follows the White Rabbit down a rabbit hole, she finds herself in an enchanted world, filled with creatures like the Mad Hatter, the disappearing Cheshire Cat, and the Queen of Hearts. Alice quickly finds out that nothing is as it seems in the wild world of Wonderland...

Illustrated with John Tenniel's superb drawings throughout.

Condition

A fair copy only. The spine is rubbed with mottled fading and fraying to the front joint. There is damage to the head of the spine, and the corners are bumped. The inner binding is pulled to the prelims but secure to the main body of text. Some marking to the margins in the form of tanning and spotted foxing. The book remains in readable but worn condition.
