Printing Details
First edition, first printing. Hardback, red cloth with silver titling to spine. 19.5 × 12.5cm, 164pp.
The author’s scarce debut collection of short stories, written largely while serving in the British Army during the Second World War. Julian Maclaren-Ross (1912–1964)—celebrated chronicler of Soho’s post-war Fitzrovia and the archetype for Anthony Powell’s X. Trapnel in A Dance to the Music of Time—captures the absurdities, monotony, and distinct vernacular of wartime military life. The collection includes notable stories such as "Y.M.C.A.", "I Hate Being Stood Up", and "The Swag, the Junk and the Whore", marked by Maclaren-Ross’s crisp, cinematic dialogue and dry satirical edge.
