Printing Details
First edition. Seven paperback folders in black cloth clamshell case crafted by Zaehnsdorf & Croft, and in a thin card slipcase. Silver titling to spine and front of the box. 36.5 × 34.5 × 5cm.
A complete copy of Building Lloyd's, commissioned by Lloyds of London and designed by Pentagram to mark the landmark opening of Richard Rogers' High-Tech architectural masterpiece on Lime Street.
This primarily visual archive tracks the complete evolution of the institution and the radical design of the 1986 building through an exceptional collection of loose plates, architectural drawings, and scholarly notes (each folder has printed notes to the inside, and the back of each image has descriptive text):
• Folder 1 (Lloyd's Buildings): Explores the visual rich architectural history of the previous Lloyd's headquarters and underwriting rooms.
• Folder 2 (A New Lloyd's): Includes the competitive brief, the selection of Richard Rogers & Partners, and the radical "inside-out" philosophy.
• Folder 3 (Lloyd's in 1986): A celebration of the completed structure, documenting the final interior fit-out and operational logistics.
• Folder 4 (Lloyd's Milestones): A chronological look at the key historical dates and institutional milestones of the insurance market.
• Folder 5 (Lloyd's Development): The growth of the company.
• Folder 6 (Lloyd's Impressions): Features photographic essays and artistic perspectives capturing the impact of the building on the London skyline. Featuring work by Ernest Sargieson, Susan Warburton, Jennifer Newson, Simon James, Belinda Channer, Peter Lee, Dale Barker, Sylvie Dattas, and Yolanda Christian.
• Folder 7 ("Build Lloyd's"): The complete 3D paper scale model kit.
Condition
The folders are in very good condition, with the model unopened and still in its shrink wrap. The black cloth clamshell-box has a little scuffing to the edges and rear, and one small mark to the lettering. The silver lettering itself is starting to wear a little to the front but crisp to the spine. The card slipcase has edgewear from use but has protected the case well.
