Printing Details

First edition, eighth impression. Hardback, bound in the original grey cloth with black printed titling to spine and upper board. 19 × 12.5cm, 270pp.

First published in 1904, this was M R James' first collection of ghost stories, and contains eight fine tales: 1. Canon Alberic's Scrap-Book, 2. Lost Hearts, 3. The Mezzotint, 4. The Ash-Tree, 5. Number 13, 6. Count Magnus, 7. 'Oh, Whistle, and I'll Come to You, My Lad', and 8. The Treasure of Abbot Thomas.

This edition did not include James McBryde's illustrations.

Condition

A good copy. The book opens to the title page as it is lacking the ffep and half-title. There is a hint of a slight lean to the spine, and some minor rippling to the cloth along the bottom edge of the front board. Light scattered foxing throughout, but slightly heavier to the page edges. Otherwise, this copy remains in strong readable condition.
