The autobiography of wartime pilot Patrick (Paddy) Barthropp. He joined the RAF in 1938. During WWII, he flew Lysanders, Hawker Hectors, and Spitfires across major actions, including the Dunkirk evacuation and the Battle of Britain (with No. 602 and No. 91 Squadrons). In May 1942, after destroying an Fw 190 over France, he was shot down himself. After being captured, he famously bonded briefly over beer and sausages with the German pilot who shot him down—who also helped retrieve Paddy's confiscated watch from German army soldiers. He attempted to escape twice before spending the remainder of the war in POW camps, including Stalag Luft III.
