1890–1900. New Edition (Collected and Revised by the Author). Hardback, bound in the publisher's blue cloth with gilt titling and decoration to spine and upper board. Each 19.5 × 13cm, pagination below.
This is the complete works of Bret Harte, originally the first five volumes were published in the early 1880s and expanded to ten volumes in the 1890s to include his later works. The volumes are:
1. Poems and Drama (1890). viii + 448pp, 38pp ads. Includes National Poems, Spanish Idyls and Legends, Poems in Dialect, Miscellaneous, and Parodies etc. Good condition for age, light rubbing to the blue cloth at the joints and spine ends, mild spotted foxing to page edges and prelims.
2. American Legends etc (1891). vii + 395pp, 32pp ads. Includes Prose—Earlier Papers, The Luck of Roaring Camp and Other Sketches, Bohemian Papers, Spanish and American Legends, and Tales of the Argonauts. Similar condition to volume 1.
3. Tales of the Argonauts etc (1893). 486pp, 32pp ads. A continuation of Tales of the Argonauts, and Eastern Sketches. Similar condition to above, but with a small mark to the lower front board.
4. Gabriel Conroy (1890). viii + 497pp, 32pp ads. Contains the complete novel set in 1850s California. Similar condition, with the mild foxing reaching the first few pages of text, mostly to the gutter.
5. Condensed Novels etc (1892). viii + 480pp, 32 pp ads. Contains four stories, and 15 condensed novels. Good plus condition, some light marginal foxing
6. Tales of the Pacific Slope I (1890). 456pp, 32pp ads. Contains: Flip; Maruja; A Waif of the Plains; A Phyllis of the Sierras; Found at Blazing Star; A Drift from Red Wood Camp; and A Gentleman of La Porte. Light rubbing to the boards, some spotted foxing.
7. Tales of the Pacific Slope II (1892). 536pp, 32pp ads. Concludes the Pacific Slope stories with a further 15 tales. Slightly heavier rubbing to the cloth, maerginal foxing and some age-toning. Slight wear to gilt at the head of the spine.
8. Tales of the Pine and the Cypress (1894). 456pp, 32pp ads. Contains: Snow-Bound at Eagel's; Susy; Sally Dows; The Conspiracy of Mrs Bunker; The Transformation of Buckeye Camp; and Their Uncle from California. Good condition, mild foxing to page edges and margins.
9. Buckeye and Chapparel (1896). 376pp, 32pp ads. 13 short tales. Good condition, light overall wear as above.
10. Tales of Trail and Town (1900). 467pp, 32pp ads. Some minor spotted foxing, otherwise a very good copy.
Condition
An attractive set in good plus condition for age. As mentioned above there is light rubbing to the blue cloth at the joints and spine ends, and some minor or mild spotted foxing to the each book, this is mostly to the prelims and page edges, occasionally stretching further in but the whole set. One or two pages have been opened a little roughly leading to minor marginal tears but not affecting text. The whole set remains in strong readable condition. Previous owner's nameplate appears in a few volumes, as does his signature in one volume.
This set weighs over 7kg.
