A collection of Great War letters from a Canadian stretcher bearer to his wife in Ottawa. The author had enlisted in the CEF in 1915 but frustrated with garrison duties, he transferred to medical service. He served across three distinct roles: as an orderly at No. 3 Canadian General Hospital in Boulogne, with the 2nd Entrenching Battalion, and on the front lines as a stretcher-bearer with the 29th Canadian Infantry Battalion. The letters cover the visceral combat on the Western Front during 1916 and 1917. The book was written under a pseudonym due to wartime censorship, but RAL was later identified as Sergeant Ralph Beverly Watson (see canadianletters.ca).

Condition

Poor, a reading copy. The book is ex-library with the usual marks and perforated stamps, and the inner binding is weak. The hinges have cracked but remain attached. The book remains in readable condition. Previous owner's bookplate to ffep.
