Printing Details

Second edition. Hardback, half-leather. Five raised bands and gilt titling to spine. Pastedowns replaced with a rather colourful handblocked floral design (possibly contemporary wallpaper). 20.5 × 12cm, [6], 375pp, errata.

First published in 1760, Schulze's work is an anthology / chrestomathy of English writing. The book collects excerpts, poems, essays, plays, and letters written by prominent 18th-century (and earlier) British and English-language authors. It includes a Tillotson sermon, excerpts from The Spectator, Tatler, and Idler, accounts of California, of the Bramines in the Indies, the life of Alexander Pope, Russell's description of Aleppo etc, and then a selection of poetry, and Joseph Addison's Cato.

Condition

Fair to poor. Whilst the book remains readable the front board is detached and the rear joint is a bit weak. Some age-toning throughout but the inner binding secure, and some nice woodcut head- and tailpieces, and an attractive title page woodcut engraving by Gottfried August Grundler.
