An eight volume set of Samuel Johnson's works, containing his most notable prose works.

Vol 1: (570pp) The Rambler, Nos 1–102.

Vol 2: (563pp) The Rambler, Nos 103–208.

Vol 3: (564pp) The Idler Nos 1–138, a selection from the papers of The Adventurer, and Poems.

Vol 4: (566pp) A Journey to the Western Isles of Scotland, biographies, The Vision of Theodore, Thoughts on Agriculture etc.

Vol 5: (564pp) Lives of the English Poets.

Vol 6: (569pp) Lives of the English Poets.

Vol 7: (569pp) History of Rasselas, dissertations, essays, prefaces and reviews (including The Plan of an English Dictionary, and Preface to the English Dictionary).

Vol 8: (548pp, plus index for the whole set & subscribers). Political tracts, philological tracts, letters.

Condition

Fair condition, but an uncommon imprint. The leather binding to all volumes is rubbed, bumped, and with wear to the joints (though they remain attached). The leather to the spine of volume 8 is cracked but looks to have been secure. Most volumes have the remnant of a bookplate to the front pastedown (believed to be James F Millar, with the motto "Straight Forward" and demi-archer, Millar was a noted English book collector). Internally, there is scattered foxing throughout, a little marginal creasing, but the books remain in good readable condition. A heavy set weighing over 6kg.
