Vilhelm Hammershøi (1864–1916) is known for his subtly hued paintings of quiet rooms, often featuring a lone woman, of townscapes devoid of people, and of empty landscapes. He has always been regarded as unique figure without counterparts or parallels within the Danish and international art of his era.

However, there is much to suggest that he was very much aware of and familiar with the contemporary art scene, and that he was inspired by artists from his own time. Here, his paintings are placed within an international context and shown side by side with works by artists that share a kinship and affinity with his work; artists such as Whistler, Seurat, Gauguin, Fantin-Latour, Khnopff, and Munch.
