Painted in the early to mid 1960s, this is an oil on board in a frame (but not glazed). The frame measures 56 × 46cm and the painting is 48.5 × 38cm.
Signed "Mewha" lower right. Labelled to the back with title, Mewha's address and the price (15gns).
The painting shows the remains of the corner shop on Ellor Street in Salford which was then in the process of being demolished to make way for a new housing estate. The shop's entrance is on the right hand side of the painting, with a street sign to the outside on the first floor. An empty two up two down house is next door, the windows and front door having already been removed. There is an advertising poster on the shop wall. In the background the remains of other houses in the process of being demolished are seen, surrounded by piles of bricks, and a discarded oil drum in the street.
Roy Mewha was a Salford artist, having taught in Ordsall Secondary school, Moorside High school and finally Walkden High School. He was one of the earliest members of the Salford Art Club. He died in 2020.
Condition
This painting is in good condition. There is some light but stable lifting to the paint (upper right) but no loss, and two small vertical cracks from the chimney (see pics), and one small one to the right hand side. Otherwise it remains a strong and powerful image in good condition. The frame is a little loose at the corners.
