Kings of the Oceans: Ships Built for the Hellenes 1957–1960 is the second volume in a landmark 9-volume maritime reference series by the prominent Greek shipping historian George M Foustanos. This volume focuses on a critical four-year window when Greek maritime magnates—most notably figures like Aristotle Onassis, Stavros Niarchos, and the Livanos, Goulandris, and Lemos families—were rapidly expanding and modernizing their fleets. Having largely transitioned away from relying solely on surplus WWII war-built tonnage (such as American Liberty ships and T2 tankers), Greek owners began placing massive orders for custom-designed supertankers, dry cargo vessels, and early bulk carriers in shipyards across the UK, Europe, the United States, and post-war Japan.

The book acts as a comprehensive fleet register and visual archive for every vessel delivered during the years 1957 to 1960, and each entry provides key Technical & Historical Data including original launch name and flag of registry, ordering company / managing owner, shipyard location, hull number, and year of completion, gross tonnage (GRT), deadweight tonnage (DWT), and propulsion details, as well as full subsequent history (subsequent names, reflagging, sales, and ultimate disposal/scrapping). Profusely illustrated.
