A biography and collection of letters documenting the brief life, education, and wartime service of Lieutenant John Hugh Allen (1887–1915), written by his sister. Allen was born in Dunedin, New Zealand, and studied at Jesus College, Cambridge, where he was elected President of the Cambridge Union in 1911 and was heavily active in university debating and politics. He was called to the English Bar in 1914 and was preparing to return to New Zealand to enter politics when war broke out.
