René Arnaud was just twenty-one when he was called up in September 1914. Three months later he was a 2nd Lieutenant in an infantry regiment in the front line. He fought on the Somme, went through the Champagne offensive, twice suffered the agony of Verdun, and was eventually 'saved' by being attached to the newly arrived American forces as liaison officer. In these memoirs the author brilliantly evokes the horror, filth, and vacuity of war, but he is always aware of the human comedy. War is indeed a tragedy – but it is a tragedy tinged with farce. It is tragédie bouffe.
