Printing Details

First edition. Hardback bound in green cloth with ornate gilt decoration and titling to spine and upper board. Retaining the onion skin wrapper (not shown in photos). 29 × 22.5cm, pages numbered verso only 49pp.

This book pairs Hill’s soft-focus, Pictorialist photographs with short poetic extracts on facing pages. Authors featured include William Shakespeare, John Milton, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, and Elizabeth Barrett Browning. The photographs feature children in idealized, open-air pastoral and outdoor settings—woodlands, stream beds, and coastal landscapes and published during the revival of rustic Arcadian imagery, aiming to evoke an innocent, Edenic age of nature before adulthood. The text is printed in blue, and each quotation is faced with one of 48 tipped-in monochrome photographs.

Condition

A good copy but it lacks the title page. There is light scatted foxing to the page edges and margins but is otherwise a solid copy.
