Dr Tom Fookes (1943–2013) was one of the few New Zealanders whose career encompassed the full gamut of planning roles; practitioner, policy analyst, researcher, teacher, mentor and public advocate. He was a man of many accomplishments and delighted in novel, or as others might say, dangerous ideas. It is therefore fitting that the University of Auckland’s School of Architecture and Planning has honoured Tom’s contributions to planning with this book of essays. The book is in three parts; an overview of his personal and professional life, exploration of the Ekistics notion that a holistic and interdisciplinary approach could be applied to settlement planning and other issues, and ‘dangerous ideas’ addressing perceived faults in the RMA. For planners and students alike, the essays are thought-provoking and educational but the book would also appeal to a wider readership. For planner’s who were taught by Tom, this book provides a rich insight into the life of a dedicated planning professional and respected colleague.
