Printing Details
This is an original fashion colour illustrations, showing a lady dressed in the Chinoiserie style. It dates from the late thirties. The paper measures approx. 22 × 39 cm, and is in pencil and watercolour / gouache.
The illustration shows the trend for Far Eastern design elements in the late 1930s. The dress shows a distinctive high, puffed, and structured leg-of-mutton shoulder heads, a tightly nipped-in waist, a wide contoured red cummerbund or belt, and a pleated, flared, knee-length A-line skirt. The dress features a contrasting white vest-like bodice or yoke with a high, mandarin-style collar. The most prominent feature is the undulating, ric-rac style red-and-white wavy trim running down the centre placket, around the armscyes, the waist, and trailing around the entire hemline. She wears a flat, conical, wide-brimmed hat at a rakish angle.
The artist is unknown.
