Printing Details
This is an original fashion colour illustrations, showing Southeast Asian attire. It dates from the late thirties. The paper measures approx. 20 × 29 cm, and is in pencil and watercolour / gouache. The intricate design on the jacket has been painted with a lot of detail.
The illustration heavily borrows from traditional Southeast Asian (specifically Thai/Siamese) royal and theatrical attire, which was a massive trend in Western fashion and theatre during this period. The model wears a highly decorative, pointed headdress (reminiscent of a traditional Chada crown), heavy stacked bangle bracelets on both wrists, a tiered collar necklace, and a bindi-like mark on her forehead. The jacket is a cropped, open-front bolero and features an intensely detailed, multi-colored pattern mimicking rich brocade, embroidery, or gold-threaded textiles, finished with a decorative gold fringe or tassel trim along the hem.
The artist is unknown.
