Printing Details
This is an original fashion sketch, perhaps for a leading magazine of the time, showing an elegantly dressed lady on her way to luncheon, the word restaurant can be read behind her. The paper measures approx. 34 × 49cm, and is in pen, ink, and monochrome ink wash (grisaille).
It dates to the late 1930s, perhaps very early 1940s. The silhouette and styling reinforce the late 1930s pre-war aesthetic. She is wearing a classic, bias-cut evening gown that wraps dramatically around the neck in a halter, gathering at the waist, she is also wearing a heavily jewelled bracelet. There is a rather dramatic cape over the dress, which trails behind her as she sweeps through... Her hair is styled in a sophisticated late-30s updo featuring neat, rolled top-knots and she holds a small, black box clutch. One foot can be seen peeping through at the hem of the dress.
The artist is unknown.
Condition
This drawing is in good condition, with pin holes to the top corners. There are several small spots of foxing throughout the artwork but nevertheless, this remains an impressive piece.
