Printing Details

This is an original fashion sketch, perhaps for a leading magazine of the time, showing three elegant ladies in a box at the opera or theatre. The paper measures approx. 37 × 40cm, and is in pen, ink, and monochrome ink wash (grisaille).

It dates to the late 1930s, perhaps very early 1940s. The figures feature the distinct, sharp, and structured square shoulders that came into fashion during the late 1930s as popularized by designers like Elsa Schiaparelli. The woman on the left wears a tilt hat angled forward over her brow, a classic late-30s trend designed to complement the rolled hairstyles of the era. The woman in the background sports a small, peaked garrison-style cocktail hat or tilt hat typical of immediate pre-war fashion. In the foreground, there a pair of opera glasses, a programme and a flower.

The artist is unknown.

Condition

This drawing is in very good condition, with pin holes to the top corners. There are a few small spots of foxing but otherwise this remains an attractive and elegant work.
