Printing Details

First edition, second impression. Hardback in dustwrapper. 26 × 19cm, 154pp

A commercial commission from GWR to one of the great ghost writers of the twentieth century. Written as a guide to the abbeys of England (and so encouraging people to visit by train) M R James defines the distinct architectural and cultural differences between the various religious orders: Benedictines, Cluniacs, Cistercians, Augustinians, and Premonstratensians. Illustrated throughout with photographs, plans and drawings. There is an additional chapter by A Hamilton Thompson titled "Monastic Life and Buidlings".

Condition

The book is in strong readable condition though with spotted foxing throughout. The dustwrapper is faded to the spine and with a few small closed tears and edgewear to the rear panel and joints. However, a good plus copy.
