Printing Details

First edition, first printing. Hardback, red cloth with gilt titling to spine. 22 × 14cm, 438pp

The first book in Peake's Gormenghast trilogy. As the novel opens, Titus, heir to Lord Sepulchrave, has just been born: he stands to inherit the miles of rambling stone and mortar that stand for Gormenghast Castle. Inside, all events are predetermined by a complex ritual, lost in history, understood only by Sourdust, Lord of the Library. There are tears and strange laughter; fierce births and deaths beneath umbrageous ceilings; dreams and violence and disenchantment contained within a labyrinth of stone.

Condition

A good reading copy. There is some fading to the red boards, a hint of splaying to the boards and light spotted foxing to the page edges. However, the main body of text is good and the book remains in strong readable condition.
