Printing Details

This is a State Ball invitation and dance card for a ball given by the Viceroy of India and held at the Viceregal Lodge in Simla in October 1919.

The invitation was issued to a Major P V Cotton and has the royal crest in gilt to the top, the date of the Ball was Friday, 3 October 1919. The original dance card is also enclosed which opens out to list the dances and those who were 'booked' for that dance. The invitation measures 20.5 × 15.5cm, the dance card is 5.5 × 12cm when closed.

The viceroy at the time was Frederic John Napier Thesiger, 1st Viscount Chelmsford, best known for introducing the Montagu-Chelmsford Reforms.

Condition

The invitation is in very good condition, the dance card is a little creased as it would have been taken in and out of a pocket, and has lost the pencil attached to the string.
