This is a handwritten and signed envelope sent by the Victorian novelist William Harrison Ainsworth to journalist Cyrus Redding in 1862. It has been pasted down onto card. Ainsworth's embossed crest has been taken from the back of the envelope and stuck to the front. It is stamped and postmarked (dated March 22, '61). The card measures 16 × 10, and the envelope measuresapprox 13.5 × 7.5cm.
W Harrison Ainsworth (1805–1882) was a writer of historical novels (The Tower of London, The Lancashire Witches, Dick Turpin etc), and close friend of Charles Dickens. The recipient was Cyrus Redding (1785–1870), a journalist, editor and wine writer. He lived at 10 Hill Road, St John's Wood in north London, and was also a friend of Dickens.
Condition
Good condition for age. There is some browning but Ainsworth's signature remains clear.
