A collection of writings and superior steel engravings. The text is printed in triple columns and comprises commentary on the plates, art news, correspondence, obituaries (this issue including J M W Turner [on page 46, not 36 as printed] and A N W Pugin), and reviews etc. There are 48 full-page plates, the majority are finely detailed steel engravings. The the first 25 are from The Vernon Gallery and include works by Landseer, Etty, Danby, Wilkie, Turner, Stothard, and T S Cooper. The next eight are really fine engravings of sculpture, including works by Canova, B E Spence, Thorwaldsen, and Foley. There are three drawings by Professor Mucke of The Cardinal Virtues, and finally, 8 drawings being selections from the portfolio of Moritz Retzch, engraved by G & E Dalziell. There are also many smaller illustrations within the text.
Condition
This copy is in very good condition for age. There is some light rubbing to the joints and mild, intermittent foxing, this is to the plates which are printed on thicker paper, but it is marginal and the plates remains in a very good state also. The book is free from inscription.
