First edition, third printing. Hardback, bound in red cloth with gilt titling to spine and gilt elephant motif to upper board, as well as Christ's Hospital school crest. Top edge gilt. 20.5 × 13cm. xii, 338pp + 2pp ads.
First published in 1910, Rewards and Fairies is a collection of stories and a sequel to Puck of Pook's Hill. Through the agency of Puck, two children—Dan and Una—meet a glittering array of historical characters from flint and iron age tribes to 'Good Queen Bess' and Sir Francis Drake. This is also a noteworthy Kipling title as Rewards and Fairies was the first printing of the poem "If..."
Condition
A decent copy. There is light foxing to the pages' fore-edge (mostly at the edges of plates), and a school prize label to the front pastedown which has become foxed. One small mark to the upper board just beneath the crest, but otherwise the pages are clean and the inner binding is secure.
