Second edition, new and enlarged. Hardback, rebound in full leather with (dark) contrasting leather title labels to spine. Top edge gilt. 19.5 × 14.5cm, xx + 352pp.

Not signed but with the bookplate of Campbell of Succoth Bart. to the front pastedown, and with "From the Publishers" stamped in blind to the half-title.

This is the updated edition of the 11892 first edition, and is considered the definitive reference for collectors of the book-plate revival of the late 19th century. Egerton Castle categorizes plates by era and style, from early armorial (1590 through to the Restoration), the eighteenth century (literary, portrait, allegoric, and landscape), and modern. The book is illustrated with sixteen plates in either colour or copperplate engraving, and many more printed illustrations within the text.

Condition

A very solid copy, the rebinding being done to a high standard. There is light spotted foxing throughout but the book with secure inner binding and in strong readable condition.
