First published in 1753, this is apothecary James Nelson's exploration of the dynamics between authority and nurturing within the realm of child-rearing. He does this by taking what he believes to be the three pillars of the child's development: health, manners and education. James Nelson, a prominent figure in early 19th-century educational reform, draws on his extensive background in philosophy and social theory to dissect the complexities of child governance.
