Printing Details
Here is a collection four original historical and military signatures, from the late nineteenth, early twentieth century. They are clipped from letters and have been pasted down on a sheet which measures approx. 24 × 15.5cm.
1. George Nathaniel Curzon, 1st Marquess Curzon of Kedleston (1859–1925). English statesman, author, and colonial administrator. He became the Viceroy of India 1898 aged just 39. He returned to England in 1905, and served in Lloyd George's war cabinet, and became Foreign Secretary in 1919.
2. Lieutenant-General Sir Frederick Walter Kitchener KCB (1858–1912), younger brother of Kitchener of Khartoum. He served in the Second Anglo-Afghan War, the Mahdist War, and took part in the Battle of Omdurman which resulted in the recapture of Khartoum. He also served in the Second Boer War, and ended as Governor and military Commander-in-Chief of Bermuda.
3. Sir Alfred Comyn Lyall GCIE, KCB, PC, FBA (1835–1911), British civil servant, literary historian and poet. He joined the Indian Civil Service in 1856, and served a long career in India.
4. Sir Leander Starr Jameson, 1st Baronet, KCMG, CB, PC (1853–1917). British-born South African colonial politican. He is perhaps best known for leading the ill-fated Jameson Raid, whih was intended to trigger an uprising by the primarily British expatriate and settler workers in the Transvaal, but it failed. Jameson was captured by the Boers but returned to the British where he stood trial and was imprisoned for his part in leading the botched raid.
