Printing Details
This is a signed card by Kitchener of Khartoum. The card measures 11 × 8cm, and has been laid down on a larger piece of card measuring approx 15 × 11.5cm. Kitchener has signed boldly in black ink and a further annotation to bottom of the card reads "In London, 5th November at 17 Belgrave Square, W".
This was an important period for Kitchener. He had won the Battle of Omdurman with a final rout of the Dervishes in September 1898, and on 31st October 1898 he was created Baron Kitchener of Khartoum, making this one of the earliest examples of his using the title. Henry Horatio, 1st Earl Kitchener of Khartoum (1850–1916) was an Irish soldier and statesman serving on the Palestine Campaign (1874–78), Cyprus (1882), the Sudan Campaign (1883–85) and South Africa (1900–1902). During the Great War he was appointed Secretary for War and recruited a great army before being lost on HMS Hampshire in 1916.
The address is also important. 17 Belgrave Square belonged to Pandeli Ralli, a prominent businessman and Member of Parliament. He was a close personal friend of Kitchener who used the address as his social headquarters when in London.
Condition
The signed card is in good clean condition. The backing card is a little foxed to the reverse. Kitchener's signature remains crisp and clear.
