A foundational work in early electrotherapy, exploring the influence of atmospheric electricity on human physiology. Bertholon believed that electricity was a fluid that permeated the atmosphere and influenced human health, categorizing diseases as either spontaneous (caused by an excess of internal electricity), or as accidental (caused by a deficiency). He was a proponent of electrotherapy and designed various machines to electrify patients for a wide range of ailments. The book is illustrated with six fold out plates to the rear of volume 2.
Condition
Fair, but complete. The leather is in poor condition, with both front boards detached and the remaining leather heavily rubbed and bumped. The pages are age-toned, and with staining to the upper pages of the top margin of the last few pages of volume 1. Previous owner's name and label to both volumes (M J Dupont). The inner binding holding well, both are in readable condition but a little fragile. All six plates are present.
