Printing Details

This is a handwritten letter signed by Rudyard Kipling, sent from his home at Bateman's in Burwash, Sussex. It is on his own headed notepaper, with the nearest telegram and railway station mentioned (Burwash and Etchingham). The notepaper is light blue and measures 10 × 15cm. It is undated, and Kipling lived at Bateman's from 1902 to 1936.

The letter reads "Dear Mr Maude, If 10.30 will suit you and Mr Harris on Monday for the trip to Rottingdean I'll meet you at the top of the hill then. Very sincerely, Rudyard Kipling". The identity of Messrs Maude and Harris are unknown, as is the nature of the trip, but for Kipling it would have been a return to the village he lived in between 1897 and 1902, and where he wrote many of the Just So stories.

Condition

The letter itself is in good condition, some light spotted foxing, and a small crease top left. It has been neatly pasted down at the corners on to a piece of card which also has a little foxing. Kipling's signature remains clear and crisp.
