A volume from the History of the Great War Based on Official Documents. This book covers the pivotal transition of the British Expeditionary Force from the mobile warfare of 1914 to the static, gruelling reality of the trenches. The main events in this volume are 'The Winter of 1914–1915' detailing the stabilization of the front line and the harsh conditions of the first winter in the trenches. 'The Battle of Neuve Chapelle' which analyses the first major organized British offensive of 1915, and 'The Second Battle of Ypres' documenting the first large-scale use of poison gas by German forces and the desperate Allied defence of the Ypres Salient.
This copy is illustrated with 19 maps within the text, and to the endpapers but lacks the separate map volume.

There is sunning to the spine and along the top edge of the boards, but otherwise this is a good solid readable copy.
