This book contains two essays that explore explores the psychological origins of panic and the figure of the Greek god Pan.
1. "Ephialtes: A Pathological-Mythological Treatise on the Nightmare in Classical Antiquity" (1900) by Roscher, in which he argues that the terrifying physiological experience of a nightmare was personified by the ancients as Pan or similar satyr-like figures.
2. "An Essay on Pan" by James Hillman (1972) forms the lengthy introductory chapter in which he argues that by killing the gods and turning them into mere medical symptoms or syndromes, we have lost a vital connection to nature and our own instincts.
