Printing Details

1975–1982. First editions, hardback in dustwrappers. Each 28 × 22cm. North-east: 133pp + 24 pages of plates, Central: 201pp + 32 pages of plates, North-west 222pp + 23 pages of plates, South-west 226pp + 8 pages of plates. Each volume with a large folding map to rear.

The first four volumes of RCHME's series on the county of Northamptonshire (the final two volumes were Northampton and the architecture). They form an important archaeological guide to Northamptonshire, recording the known finds, excavations and features (earthworks, cropmarks, and buried remains). The books are illustrated with detailed maps, aerial photography. Key features of each volume: North-East: Iron Age and Roman settlements, the Nene Valley, and medieval deer parks; Central: Covers 67 parishes; heavy emphasis on moated sites, fishponds, and ridge-and-furrow; North-West: Detailed records of deserted medieval villages and prehistoric cropmarks; and South-West: Extensive survey of the Whittlewood and Salcey Forest areas.

Condition

The books themselves are in very good condition, with clean pages and maps intact. The dustwrappers have some wear: the first two volumes are very good, volume 3 has a small scar to the front of the dustwrapper, and the final volume has surface wear to the wrapper and edgewear. However, they remain a very good usable set and all in strong readable condition. A heavy set at nearly 7kg.
