Printing Details
This is an original membership card for 1962 for the famous Cavern Club on Liverpool's Mathew Street. It is a pocket sized card booklet bound with one staple. It measures 10 × 6.5cm. The contents consist of member's details, a note on leaving handbags etc unattended, two double spread of "club notes" and "for official use only", a double spread calendar for 1962, a map of the Cavern Club's location and an illustration of Mathew Street.
The Cavern Club was founded in 1957 as a jazz club by Alan Sytner. John Lennon played there in 1957 with The Quarrymen. The club wasn't a great success and it was sold to Ray McFall who opened the club to the emerging "Beat" scene. The years 1961 and 1962 saw The Beatles become a major name at the club, with Pete Best on drums until Ringo took up the sticks in August 1962. It was also during this period that Brian Epstein visited the club and signed on as The Beatles' manager.
The year of this membership card saw some important dates in The Beatles history, such as April 5 when Pete Best sang and Paul McCartney played drums, June 19 saw their "Welcome Home" session after returning from Hamburg, August 15th was Pete Best's last appearance, and August 19th saw Ringo Starr's first. A few days later on 22nd August, Granada TV filmed the band performing "Some Other Guy" which is the earliest known footage of the group.
Condition
This membership card is in good condition for age. There is rubbing and wear to the covers consistent with it being in and out of a pocket, and frequently used. The owner's details have been filled out but none of the other pages are marked. Some light age-related tanning to the contents but otherwise a solid piece of Cavern Club / Beatles history.
Books are currently zero-rated for duty (as of January 2026), so the price shown is the price you pay.
