Third edition. Hardback bound in the original dark green cloth with ornate gilt decoration and titling to spine and upper board. All edges gilt. 18.5 × 12.5cm, 165pp.
A collection of five Christmas Tales from Washington Irving's Note Books, Irving's experiences at the English country estate of Mr. Bracebridge during the "coaching days" of the early 19th century, focusing on the sights, sounds, smells and traditions of "Old" Christmas. Illustrated throughout by Randolph Caldecott.
Condition
Good condition. The binding remains attractive, there is light rubbing and bumping to the corners, a very little fraying to the rear joint. There is a slight lean to the spine. Previous owner's bookplate to front pastedown and inoffensive inscription below. Light wear to hinges but the inner binding secure and the book remaining in strong readable condition.
