A classic of Second World War aviation. B J Ellan (the pseudonym of pilot Brian Lane) writes a visceral and unvarnished account of the life of a Spitfire pilot, describing the sensation of flying and fighting, the physical toll of aerial warfare, smell of the high-octane fuel, the roar of the Merlin engine, the adrenaline of the dogfight and the sombre feeling when a friend didn't return. He saw the Spitfire as an extension of the pilot, the sensitivity of its controls, and the confidence if gave the pilots.
Brian Lane perished the same year as publication, his flight encountered a group of Focke-Wulf 190 fighters off the Dutch coast and he was last seen engaging them.
Condition
