Printing Details

First thus. Limited edition, this being no 287/600. Hardback, quarter vellum with gilt titling to spine, blue cloth boards. Fore-edge untrimmed. 20 × 13cm, 286pp.

Signed by R C Sherriff and Vernon Bartlett to the limitation page.

R C Sherriff's Great War play of 1928, here in the first novel edition adapted with Vernon Bartlett, concerns a group of British officers on the front line and opens in a dugout in the trenches in France. Raleigh, a new eighteen-year-old officer fresh out of English public school, joins the besieged company of his friend and cricketing hero Stanhope, and finds him dramatically changed.

Condition

Good plus. There is spotting to the vellum spine, browning to the endpapers and page edges, and a little rubbing and marking to the cloth including some bumping to the top corner of the rear board but otherwise this copy is in good, solid condition. Some pages uncut (unopened at the top) so it appears the book hasn't been read. Pages clean and inner binding secure.
