Printing Details
This is a framed and glazed original watercolour painting of Samphire Hoe, the country park near Dover in Kent created in 1997. It painted on watercolour paper and laid on board. The frame measures 44 × 34cm, the mount's aperture and image is 30 × 20cm. Titled and initialled to the mount, lower right.
A lovely, evocative piece by Maggie Holt. It captures Samphire Hoe with a loose, atmospheric touch that really suits the coastal Kent landscape. Given the date (c.1997), this would have been painted shortly after the site was created using the chalk marl excavated during the construction of the Channel Tunnel.
The framing of the cliffs (the "Hoe") in the background provides a strong sense of place. The foreground, with its suggestions of marshy reeds and a pool of water, reflects the early naturalization of the park.
Condition
The painting is in very good condition, the mount has a little chalk dust caught between it and the glass. The frame is in good order. Some spotting to the rear of the board, not affecting the painting.
