The Wind's Twelve Quarters is a retrospective short story collection that serves as a map of Ursula Le Guin's early career. Rather than a single narrative, it is a compilation of 17 stories that trace her evolution as a writer from the early 1960s to the mid-1970s. Included are Semley's Necklace" which became the prologue to Rocannon's World and "Winter's King" set on the planet Gethen from The Left Hand of Darkness, and "The Word of Unbinding" marks her first foray into the world of Earthsea.
