First edition thus, first printing. Hardback in dustwrapper. 23.5 × 16cm, 484pp
This is the first unabridged, authoritative edition. Maiden Castle was the last of Powys's Wessex novels (after Wolf Solent, A Glastonbury Romance, and Weymouth Sands). Until 1990 the novel had only available in an abridged version, as Powys' original typescript of Maiden Castle had been reduced by about one-fifth of its original length for publication.
It is an atmospheric novel that explores the collision between modern disillusionment and ancient, mystical forces as the story follows Dud No-man, a historical novelist living in Dorchester, having to navigate a series of complex emotional and metaphysical entanglements.
Condition
The book itself is in very good condition. The dustwrapper is bumped to the corners and spine ends but remains in good order.
