The narrative follows Tweedie, a widowed woman in her fifties, who travels to India seeking spiritual peace. Instead of finding immediate serenity, she encounters a "Way of the Heart" that is gruelling and transformative. Her teacher, Bhai Sahib, uses a method often called "the way of the blame." He doesn’t offer gentle platitudes; he uses harshness and indifference to strip away her pride, attachments, and intellectual defences, and the "Chasm of Fire" refers to the painful, burning sensation of the ego being destroyed to make room for divine love. It’s a raw account of despair, anger, and eventual surrender.
