Published as no 34 in the Ogonyok Library series, Apologia is a collection of historical fantasies. In Bulychev's introduction, he discusses the relationship between history and science fiction. He appears to use this title to explore alternative histories, writing that while a historian deals with facts, a writer of historical fantasy uses those facts to create a warning or lesson. There are six short pieces by Bulychev in this book, blending his writer's imagination, historical fact and political satire.
Kir Bulychev (1934–2003) was a Soviet Russian science fiction writer, critic, translator and historian, perhaps best known for his Alisa Seleznyova series. As a historian, his main field was the medieval history of Burma.
