Signed and dedicated by Svetoslav Minkov to the half title page in Bulgarian, it translates as "To good friends Brigitte and Peter with much warmth and devotion – Sv. Minkov, London, 29.11.60". The recipients were Brigita Yosifova, a Bulgarian author and journalist, and Peter Tempest, a British poet and translator.
A rare selection from a renowned figure in Bulgarian fiction, leading light of the Bulgarian absurdist fiction movement, and often referred to as the father of Bulgarian science fiction and horror. This book has four sections: firstly a collection of twenty-five short stories including his most famous (The Lady with the X-ray Eyes), as well as The Hydrogen Gentleman and the Oxygen Girl, The Woman in the Golden Coffin etc, the second section is travelogues , the third is Fairy Tales and the fourth is feuilletons / satirical sketches.
Svetoslav Minkov (1902–1966) travelled widely through Europe, Asia and South America before and after the Second World War, working as a journalist for various Communist newspapers, and in an official capacity for the Bulgarian government's cultural office.
Condition
This copy is in good plus condition. The book remains in sound readable shape with secure binding. There is some tanning to the endpapers, and light age-toning throughout but otherwise in solid shape. Uncommon to find signed.
