First edition. Hardback, bound in the original red cloth with gilt decoration to spine and blindstamped design to upper board. Top edge gilt. 25.5 × 19cm, xxi + 293pp

A large collection of fables from Aesop, Jean de la Fontaine, William Cowper, Ralph Waldo Emerson and others, profusely illustrated by Charles Robinson, with 28 colour plates, and many further black and white plates, both full page and within the text.

Condition

Fair condition only, but remaining in good readable condition. The red cloth is faded, rubbed and bumped, with a few small spots of fraying. There is light foxing throughout, and the inner binding is a little strained in places but remaining secure. Previous owner's gift inscription glued in to the back of the frontis. The bottom edge of page 269 has a tear which does effect the b&w illustration. All plates are present.
