The Whirlwind was a short-lived newspaper produced by Stuart Erskine (Ruaraidh Erskine of Marr) and Herbert Vivian. It advocated nationalism, peace, free trade and Irish Home Rule, and opposed female suffrage and socialism, and was also strongly Jacobite and played a leading role in the Neo-Jacobite Revival of the 1890s. The paper contains notices, politics, correspondence and reviews etc.
The Whirlwind was noted for publishing illustrations by artists, and this issue carries Walter Sickert's etching of Philip Wilson Steer's 1888 painting "Knucklebones, Walberswick, Suffolk", and an 1890 pen and ink portrait of the MP Henry Labouchere by Walter Sickert. Sickert was the paper's art critic.
Condition
Fair condition. The covers and the edges of some pages are quite heavily tanned and foxed. The paper is torn to some of the folds, particularly the outer fold of the front covers, and as mentioned, some of the folds are uncut so it opens somewhat awkwardly but this would be easily remedied.
