Matisse in Morocco explores the radiant paintings and newly discovered drawings created during a pivotal phase of the French artist's career—his two visits to Tangier in early 1912 and in the winter of 1912/1913. The exotic environment of North Africa proved extraordinarily fruitful, and Matisse completed twenty-three paintings, many of them masterworks. and more than sixty-five energetic pen-and-ink drawings.
This book has 255 illustrations, 50 of which are in colour, four essays on Matisse and Morocco, and the appendices consist of 1. Letters relating to the Morosov and Shchukin Commissions, 2. Triptychs, Triads, and Trios, and 3. Provenance, Exhibition History and Literature for Paintings.
Condition
The book itself is in good solid condition, with some finger-marking to the pages' fore-edge. The dustwrapper is a little crinkled to the edges and spine ends, with one small tear (less than 1cm) to the bottom edge of the rear of the wrapper.
