This copy has been signed by Tom Driberg to the ffep, and loosely inserted are two Christmas cards signed by Hannan Swaffer (one is a 1959 card with a printed drawing by the cartoonist Vicky, and the other a Daily Express card, both signed by Swaffer to the front), and two handwritten postcards from Swaffer, one from Gibraltar, the other from Nazareth and both dated 1961.
A biography of Hannen Swaffer written by Tom Driberg , who himself a journalist had access to Swaffer's papers, letters, books, relatives and friends. Swaffer, who died in 1962 was a legendary character in Fleet Street; instantly recognizable at theatre first nights, in the Savoy Grill, and on Labour platforms. He contributed to the making of modern journalism with triumphant scoops , inventive stunts, and passionate crusades: and was a pioneer in using photography as an essential element of news presentation. At the peak of his career he could justifiably claim to be one of the most widely read journalists in the world and Britain's most devastating dramatic critic.
